Prayer FAQs

What is prayer?

Simply put, prayer is talking to God. More than that, it is a two-way conversation. So, it’s not just about talking at God, but taking time out to listen and be in his presence.

How do I even start to pray?

There is no set formula. Maybe start by:

  • Expressing how you feel

  • Acknowledging what God has done for you

  • Thanking God

  • Being quiet and listening to God

  • Asking God for help for others or yourself

Is praying only for ‘holy’ or specific people?

In a word no! Anyone can talk to God, anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

How should I pray?

Helpfully, Jesus himself offered up an example when he said

‘Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Amen’

Matthew 6.9 to 13 New Living Translation

Why pray?

  • It’s amazing that God himself wants to hear from us

  • God doesn’t merely want to hear from us, he wants a relationship. So, ‘as you come close to God [..] he will come close to you.’ James 4.8

  • It is a way to depend upon and trust the one who has our best interests at heart as our creator

  • Prayer is a safe space where God hears negative and positive feelings and our deepest thoughts without using them against us

What about praying with other people?

There is something about praying with other people that enhances and enriches the experience. Christianity is not a solitary religion, but one best practiced in community

Do my prayers always get answered?

The standard answer to this question is yes, it’s just sometimes the answer is “no” or “wait”!

It is too easy to treat God as if he is some sort of heavenly Santa Clause passing out gifts left, right and centre as he sees fit. God does bless us, but this is in the context of a relationship built on more than hand-outs. And because it is a relationship and God wants it to be healthy and mutual, he gives us what we need, not what we want – and they are not necessarily the same thing or easy to get to grips with!

Do I need to use specific words such as Amen?

Definitely not. Everyday language is just fine. It is about using the words that best express what we are feeling, thinking and concerned about at the time.

Prayers can finish with the word Amen. This means ‘so be it’ or ‘it is true.’ However, if we think about prayer as a conversation with God then there are times when we can be formal and times when we can be informal with God as with anyone else. So, prayers can finish with silence or a thanks as much as an Amen.

Isn’t praying in a church building or a holy place mean our prayers are more effective?

The great thing is God can hear us as effectively as we pray waiting in line at the supermarket (a good way to remain calm and patient by the way) as he can in a cathedral

Am I not just talking to myself?

It can feel like that sometimes. Even though prayer is an encounter with a real person, it is not a person who we can look straight in the eyes. However, there is something mysterious about prayer that makes it effective and more than just about ourselves. Prayer leads to real change in real people. The experience of prayer and the relationship with God that it generates means that it is much more than a self-help exercise or self-talk.
